COMMUNITY Group partner club Bournville Rugby has announced an exciting new education programme and rugby academy.

Working in partnership with Sandwell College, Bournville’s community department – powered by Community Group – will deliver a BTEC Level 3 extended Diploma in Sport.

The programme will be a Rugby Academy designed to offer aspiring young players a chance to make a career in rugby and sport. It is of the same model run by fellow partner club Stourbridge Rugby since 2019 and which recently saw five players recruited into the club’s First XV.

All sessions will be run from Bournville’s facilities at Avery Fields Sports & Events and the programme will be open to both male and female applicants. The enrolment process starts immediately, with delivery beginning in September.

The BTEC Level 3 extended Diploma in Sport is equivalent to 3 A-Levels and will provide a platform for an exciting career within sport for those about to complete Year 11 at school. Alongside their education, each student will be coached and taught by highly qualified and experienced staff from Sandwell College and Bournville Rugby.

Students attending the Academy will benefit from a similar training programme to Bournville’s First XV, with pathways into the rugby club at all levels from the Colts and senior teams.

On completion of the course, students will have the opportunity to progress onto University or to work within the sports, education or community coaching sectors. Pathways for students include careers in physiotherapy, sport therapy, rugby/sport coaching, match officiating, nutrition, psychology, strength and conditioning or sport science.

There will be a Year 11 open touch rugby festival held at Avery Fields on Friday, June 11 and this will be followed by an online information evening on Wednesday, June 16.

Scott Thomas, Director of Sport for Sandwell College, said: “I’m excited to announce this programme in partnership with Community Group and Bournville Rugby Club. This programme will offer young people a unique learning environment. We have a long-standing relationship with Community Group and I’m glad to see the partnership growing and flourishing. We’ve had a tremendously difficult year and can’t wait to get started.”

Founder of Community Group, Matt Price, added: “We at Community Group want to offer the very best for our partner clubs and in working with Scott and the Sandwell College team, we can certainly do that. To be able to develop an academy that not only keeps 16-19 year olds as part of the club, it also enables each student to develop their education in a sporting world.”
