Community Group’s Midlands & North Area Manager and Head of Community at Bournville RFC, Steve Johns provides an update in his latest and last blog
We have had a great few months at Bournville RFC Community Department and there is a lot to update you on since my last blog. As we head into September, we have a number of exciting club activities and developments.
My last blog
This will be my last Community Group blog, as I am relocating with my family to the South West of England at the end of this month.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Community Group in various roles, most recently as Head of Community at Bournville RFC. Working in community sport is a privilege and has enabled me to have an impact on a number of different projects and areas.
I would firstly like to thank Matt and Simon Price for all of the opportunities I have been given in my four years at Community Group, and for their support both personally and professionally.
I’d like to thank all of the Community Group colleagues past and present for their relentless approach to driving opportunities for all age groups and activities. It’s due to our teamwork and the shared vision of the company that we are able to have such an impact at our partner clubs and organisations. The growth of the company is testament to the hard work being put in at all levels.
I’d also like to thank the board at Bournville RFC for their support and investment in the Community Department since I started as Head of Community. I have plenty of ‘best memories’, such as many touch rugby days, all the camps, matchdays, wheelchair and walking rugby events, funding successes and generally being around the amazing people involved at the club. To all of the community rugby coaches that have ever done any work for Bournville RFC Community Department, thank you for your time and energy in creating fantastic opportunities across all projects.
To everyone who I have worked with at any point on this journey, thank you for the memories and all the best for the future.
The future of the Community Department is in great hands and this will all be announced officially on the Community Group social media channels very soon! We recently hired for the positions of Rugby Development Manager and Community Rugby Coach at Bournville. We are also delighted that we will be able to soon reveal the new Head of Community at Bournville RFC & Area Manager for the Midlands and North, so watch this space!
Bournville Rugby Academy Launch
In May, we announced an exciting new education programme and rugby academy in partnership with Sandwell College. From September 2021, Bournville’s Community Department will work alongside Sandwell to deliver a BTEC Level 3 extended Diploma in Sport as well as providing a Rugby Academy. It is designed to offer aspiring young players a chance to make a career in rugby and sport, with all sessions run from our top-class facilities at Avery Fields Sports & Events.
The programme is open to both male and female applicants, with the enrolment process starting immediately. Please click HERE for more details and how to express an interest in enrolling.
We have a lot of interest in schools coaching delivery for the new term and indeed from September onwards. We are looking forward to working with our new school partners to support and enrich their existing curriculum.
If you are interested in having Bournville RFC-led provision in your school, we would love to hear from you.
Summer Camp Activities
We have been very busy planning and preparing for our ongoing HAF (Holiday Activities and Food) Camps, which we have called the ‘Active Avery Fields Holiday Camps’.
‘Active Avery Fields Holiday Camps’ provide enjoyable activities, learning opportunities and nutritious meals for primary and secondary school children. Children have access to a variety of fun outdoor and indoor activities, including multi-sport games (football, cricket, rounders, tag rugby activities, etc) throughout the summer holidays, as well as free cooked meals, all at no cost to parents. If you would like to check out the availability of sessions, please click HERE.
This opportunity is in addition to our Bournville Rugby and Wooden Spoon Multi Sports provision which can be booked HERE and started yesterday.
Food Delivery Project
We have also been busy with our food delivery project, thanks to funding from the Heart of England Community Foundation. We delivered 905 meals to those in the community who needed them. Click HERE to read more.
