Community Group’s Midlands & North Area Manager and Head of Community at Bournville RFC, Steve Johns provides an update in his latest blog

We have had a great few months at Bournville RFC Community Department and there is a lot to update you on since my last blog. We have engaged with our fantastic club members and also with those within the wider local community. As we head into June, we have a number of exciting club activities and events coming up.

Bournville Rugby Academy Launch

We have just announced an exciting new education programme and rugby academy in partnership with Sandwell College.

From September 2021, Bournville’s Community Department will work alongside Sandwell to deliver a BTEC Level 3 extended Diploma in Sport as well as providing a Rugby Academy. It is designed to offer aspiring young players a chance to make a career in rugby and sport, with all sessions run from our top-class facilities at Avery Fields Sports & Events.

The programme is open to both male and female applicants, with the enrolment process starting immediately. Please click HERE for more details.

Year 11 touch rugby festival

We are looking forward to welcoming Year 11 students from across the city to a touch rugby event at Avery Fields on Friday, June 11.

This will give the students a much-deserved afternoon of fun after a busy 12 months. The event is free and please see the below flyer for further details.

Schools Activities

We have had a great time with our partner schools since we have been back delivering, and we have loved coaching new groups as well as re-engaging with familiar faces.

We have a lot of interest in schools coaching delivery for the new term and indeed from September onwards. We are looking forward to working with our new school partners to support and enrich their existing curriculum.

If you want to have Bournville RFC-led provision in your school, take a look at our flyer and see what we can offer you! If you have any questions, I would love to hear from you.

Camps and club events

As well as returning to schools, we were able to run rugby and multi-sport camps during the Easter half-term, enjoying record-breaking numbers with 94 different children attending.

We are also proud to announce a new partnership with Wooden Spoon – the children’s charity of rugby – who are supporting our newly named ‘Wooden Spoon Multi Sports Camps’. We are very grateful to Wooden Spoon for helping us widen our provision and enable more children to attend. We believe rugby and sport should be accessible for everyone, and this partnership is a great example of this.

The first camp of our partnerships is next week when we will also be running our inaugural girls camp. For further details and how to book, click HERE.

‘Tackling Isolation’ Project

We are proud to be able to support the local community with our ‘Tackling Isolation’ project. We have received regular calls with club members and their extended families and friends, keeping in touch and providing a friendly voice at the end of the phone. A community department is about more than just activities on the field, and we want to be able to support everyone we can off the field too.

Job Opportunities

We are hiring for the roles of Rugby Development Manager and Community Rugby Coach at Bournville. The closing date for the jobs is Friday, June 18 and to apply, please click HERE.
