Our Head of Delivery and Bournville Rugby’s Head of Community, Steve Johns provides an update in his latest blog for Community Group

Head of Delivery Update

This lockdown has allowed us to spend more time planning together as a team. Our Heads of Community have all been busy discussing and updating our programmes of study and discussing best practice.

The theme for the last Heads of Community video call was ‘hats or wigs’, and it’s fair to say Matt Goode knocked this one out of the park with a striking resemblance to Captain Jack Sparrow! It’s great to keep in touch and also use this time to plan effectively for when programmes start again.

I have also been utilising some time to update and enhance key documents and policies alongside Simon Price. It is vital that we are in an excellent position for the safety and wellbeing of all those that engage with our provision in this ever-changing climate.

Bournville Community Department Update

Community Group Midlands Cup Strava Challenge

We went head-to-head with Stourbridge Rugby in the inaugural Community Group Midlands Cup with more than 15,000km logged altogether – Stourbridge claiming victory with an impressive total of 8,453km to Bournville’s 6,907km. Well done to Stourbridge and it was great to have a combined total of more than 400 athletes from both teams taking part and staying active, which was the main reason for the challenge.

Camps and Club Events

Since my last blog we ran two-day Christmas Rugby and Multi Sport camps at the club which were well-attended.

We also ran a Community Touch Rugby day on December 19, which was attended by 45 people and included a wide range of players across our adult sections with men’s, ladies and walking rugby members.

Online skills and conditioning sessions

Since the start of lockdown 3.0 we have run a range of virtual skills and fitness challenges for all Mini & Junior age groups from U6-U16s. Parents and coaches have been fantastic and have had a go too!

We also held virtual Community Q&As with Alex Grove and Alexia McGahan, which was a great opportunity for club members and juniors to ask questions to two very experienced players. Thanks to Alex and Lex for their time – we loved it!

Schools coaching delivery

Schools coaching is being discussed with a view to resume when we are able to do so.

We have fantastic partner schools who we have been keeping in touch with and are keen for us to return.

School sessions returning will also mean setting up various provision opportunities using RFU All Schools Funding and also Satellite Club Funding for school groups.

Our Wheelchair Rugby groups will be restarting in the coming months and we have put the first few steps in place to enable this to happen.

Funded community projects

We have committed to extend our ‘Tackling Isolation’ project this winter to support those living alone.

We talk about Bournville Rugby, community rugby, sport in general, hobbies and memories, or any light hearted matter. If this could help you or someone you know linked with the club, please email community@bournbillerfc.co.uk.

We have also just heard that we have been successful with a bid for a food delivery project from Heart of England Community Foundation.

This will enable us to support those in need in the local community who are isolated or isolating during the pandemic as we move forward in the next few months. Thank you to Heart of England Community Foundation for making this possible.

The last 12 months have at times been incredibly difficult, but what it has shown is the strength of feeling within our local communities.

Community Group continue to work hard to help strengthen and support our links with all of our community partners. If you, or anyone you know, would like to know more and how you can help us continue to support or sponsor the great work going on at Bournville Rugby Community Department and our other partner clubs, please do get in touch – we would be delighted to hear from you.

Please contact me by emailing steve.johns@community-group.co.uk.

Stay safe and see you soon!
