Community Group’s Head of Community at Esher Rugby, Theo Skoumbourdis provides an update in his latest blog
Summer is finally here! Time has flown by since I first joined Community Group in March 2021 and indeed my first blog in January this year.
I hope you enjoy reading about what the community team has been up to. We have a lot of exciting projects either under way or due to start later this year, and below is an insight into our work to date.
We continue to deliver high quality camps at Esher Rugby which run alongside the school calendar. Our camps are a great way to introduce new members to the club and help children remain active during the holidays. This summer, we have two camps running – Multi-sport (August 16-18) and a First XV rugby camp (August 23-25) – and you can click HERE to book your child’s place.
In conjunction with Active Surrey, we have secured funding to deliver HAF camps during the school holidays. The Holiday, Activities and Food programme is for children aged 4-16 who receive free school meals and it involves multi-sport activities, as well as arts and crafts.
This follows our Easter HAF Camp where we served more than 120 meals across the week and we are set for a busier summer. Running for 16 days, we are set to engage with more than 400 children between July 25 – August 18 and we would like to express our thanks to Active Surrey for their support.
Last September marked the return of rugby delivery at schools and we are pleased to have developed partnerships with more than 25 education providers across Elmbridge, Woking, Addlestone, and Spelthorne. Through Community Group’s Educational Solutions, we deliver PPA and pre-and-after school rugby sessions, while providing children with the opportunity to play rugby at Esher and watch our First XV. If you would like to know more about the benefits of our in-school programmes, please take a look at our Educational Solutions document by clicking HERE.
Success on the field
The 2021/22 season was memorable for Esher as our First XV were crowned National 2 South champions, securing promotion to National 1. It was an amazing achievement to move back up to level three of English rugby and we hope this has helped to inspire the children we engage with and coach on a weekly basis through the community department.
Esher also had the chance to train with the Barbarians before their clash against England at Twickenham in June. The opportunity to see the likes of Fabien Galthie and Shaun Edwards at work on and off the pitch was invaluable and we certainly picked up a few coaching points.
Powered by Community Group, Esher Rugby’s Community Department is growing month by month. We deliver high quality coaching sessions to more than 550 children per week and we are very excited for the 2022/23 season. If you see me down at the club, please feel free to stop me and I would be delighted to tell you more.
